Welcome!

We will be blogging all semester about topics related to forensic science. Perhaps some will be extra credit reactions to a recent CSI episode and perhaps some will be scenarios for your analysis. Either way, I hope you have fun with it!

Blog #2: 9/24/12

A crime has been committed at the local 7-11 - someone has smashed the slushie machine, resulting in damage to 7-11 property. Two people witnessed the event, the clerk working at the store and a 15 year old male who was just walking into the bathroom as it happened. How would you go about solving this crime?

  1. Take individual accounts from the 2 witnesses, compile a sketch if possible, then gather any possible evidence from the damaged machine, Analyze said evidence, and search fro matches to the sketch until the perp is found.

I would look for evidence, ask the witnesses what they saw, and try to piece what they said together.

  3. Well evidence would need to be recovered, then a reconstruction put together. Since it was not a "violent" crime, the initiative would need to be looked into. Why would they smash the slushie machine? Each witness would eb questioned and the security tape looked at. Hopefully a composite sketch could be drawn. How was he acting when he came in?

  4. Start by spereating all of the witnesses. Interview them about what they saw and/or heard. Also, fingerprints should be checked on the slushie machine to get any usable prints. Also, checking the video surveillance would be very helpful.

  5. If I were an investigator for this crime, first I would see that the witnesses were separated, so I could speak to each of them alone. Next, I would see if there was damage anywhere else in the store, and ask if there was any money stolen from the cash register and/or safe(speaking to the clerk)Then I would talk to the 15 year old boy and ask what he saw, then look at the security cameras in and out of the store and see if they match with what the witnesses say. Lastly if the stories seemed to match, then I would ask for a physical description of the perpetrator to post around for arrest and questioning.

  6. First, I would interview the witnesses and see if i can get any leads on possible suspects. I would see if there were any surveillance videos. Ask around the work force and see if there are any regulars at the time of the crime. Ask the 15 year old boy if he knew the guy by street name. See where that leads me.

  7. i would ask the witnesses what happen and look at a surveillance tape to see if the witnesses stories corroborate.

  8. First the police should mark off 7-11 and separate the witnesses. Then the investigators should spot any evidence and package them up. After that an investigator should talk to the witnesses and find out their stories. Then they should call in a sketch artist and sketch out the description that the witnesses had told them. Police and investigators should search for the suspect until they find him. After that they go to trial.

  9. To begin solving this crime I'd separate both witnesses and begin questioning them and see i they can describe the corporate. I'd later pull the surveillance videos for evidence and photograph the scene. The video can then be checked to see if the suspect can be identified.

  10. To begin solving this crime I'd separate both witnesses and begin questioning them. I'd later pull the surveillance videos for evidence and find any witnesses began an interrogation and find out who broke the glass at the local 7-11 store. we can began with questioning the clerk and the 15 year old boy to get their side of the story so we can analyzed the information we have gathered from the suspects. once we do we can finally bring the case to an end.

  11. First I would tape of the crime scene and separate the witnesses. Then I would have someone question each of them and compare what they said. Next, I would have someone take pictures of the crime scene. After that, I would collect and analyze evidence from the crime scene. Also, I would look at any video tapes that may have scene the crime scene. Once everyone was questioned, evidence was looked at, tapes were watched and pictures were looked at I would use those things together to find a suspect. I would ask for an alibi and use evidence, tapes, and pictures to try to determine whether or not the person committed the crime.

  12. First, I would collect the evidence (granted the police already taped off the scene and separated the witnesses). I would see what all was used as a weapon and any trace evidence that might help solve this crime. Second, I would question the witnesses in hopes of getting a full or partial description of the person. Then, I would send the evidence (if any) to the labs for analysis if the description wasn't enough for a possible suspect. Finally, I would check the criminal against possible suspects and past/current criminals. If the guy was found, he would be charged with vandalism and if not, the case would continue to be investigated until suspect is found.

  13. Go and try to collect evidence from the security tapes. Than go around and try to find the eye witnesses and get there statement. Than go from there
